Lady Redskins Softball Team OVAC Champs!

The Caldwell Lady Redskins finally finished their OVAC 2A Championship game on Friday at the I-470 fields in Wheeling. They beat the Bridgeport Lady Bulldogs 6-2 in the game that postponed from Monday due to the weather.
The Lady Redskins jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Makalya Mumaw opened the inning with a single to center and advanced to third on a double by Laynie Sidwell. Sophia Marshall then hit into a fielder’s choice with Mumaw being out at the plate. Colie Arick reached on an error to score Sidwell and Sophia Marshall. After Cecelia Marshall singled, Colie Arick stole home to make the score 3-0.
They added three more in the fifth. Mattie Hesson reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cami Arick. Mumaw also reached on an error that score Hesson from second. Breighlee Moracco was walked. Mumaw and Moracco both scored on the same passed ball to give Caldwell the 6-0 lead.
The game was postponed in the bottom of the sixth with Cecelia Marshall hitting a double and Hanna Reiter a single before the rain came. The Lady Redskins could not push a run across after the restart on Friday and the led 6-0 going into the final inning.
Bridgeport did finally get on the scoreboard with a two-run homer by Vanessa Mullen but Mumaw then struck out three batters to end the game with a 6-2 score.
Mumaw got the win in the circle, allowing two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.
The Lady Redskins scored six runs on seven hits. Cecelia Marshall had a double and a single while Sidwell had a double and Sophia Marshall had two singles. Mumaw and Hanna Reiter each had a single.
The 16-3 Lady Redskins will start their OHSAA D7 tournament run on Thursday when they host the winner of the River vs Toronto game. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. They will also host Fort Frye on Monday for Senior Night.
