By Jeff Harrison

Shenandoah High opened the 2020-21 wrestling season with a runner-up finish at the Hickory Grove Market Invitational hosted by Warren High on Saturday.

Sheridan captured the team title with 306 points, with Coach Jesse Wells’ Zeps in second place with 292. Host Warren was third with 267 followed by Morgan (162), Fort Frye (156), Waverly (102), New Lexington (95), Meadowbrook (78), Meigs (38), Fairland (28) and Federal Hocking (22).

“We almost scored 300 points and still finished second,” Coach Wells said. “We had seven champs, on second and one third, so there were a lot of positives.”

The Zeps reached the top of the podium in seven weight classes. Winning individual titles were freshman Tristen Rossiter at 106; senior Alex Overly at 113; sophomore Drake Kanyuch at 138; senior Laramie Giesey at 145; senior Briar Portman at 182; senior Chandler Warner at 195; and sophomore Jared Trenner at 220.

Other Zeps placing in the top four were junior Tyler Bruer, second at 132 and junior Julius Kirk, third at 170.

Just missing out on a top four place finish were junior Quentin Harmon (120), junior Dylan Morgan (126) and freshman Sam Townsend (152).

Also making their varsity debuts were freshmen Kaden Palmer (160) and Axle Saling (285).

Shenandoah hosts Martins Ferry and Shadyside in a tri-match on Wednesday starting at 6 p.m.
