Football: Colts Rout Crooksville for Third Win

The Meadowbrook Colts took care of business early, racking up 35 first quarter points en route to a 42-6 rout of visiting Crooksville at Eugene Capers Field on Friday.

Coach Steve Norman’s squad, which put a Week 2 loss to Mogadore in the rear-view mirrow with back-to-back wins including last week’s thriller against Guernsey County rival Cambridge, improved to 3-1 on the season while sending Crooksville to its third loss in as many games.

The Colts’ first score of the night came on a four-yard touchdown run by Sam Bopp, with Cam Morrison adding the point-after kick for a 7-0 MHS lead.

A Trevon Mayle interception set up the next Meadowbrook TD, which came via another four-yard scoring jaunt by Bopp. Another Morrison PAT boot followed and the hosts were on top, 14-0.

A Crooksville fumble led to yet another tally for the Colts, with Marshall Dyer pouncing on the loose ball at the 31-yard line.

QB Josh Hupp teamed with Hunter Eubanks for a 31-yard TD strike from there, and Morrison’s kick boosted the lead to 21-0.

Still in the first quarter, Hupp found Brady McManaway for a 41-yard scoring pass and following yet another fumble by the Ceramics – recovered this time by DeShawn Mayle – Hupp and Trevon Mayle hooked up for a 14-yard TD, with Morrison kicking two more extra-points to widen the gap to 35-0.

The Colts’ special teams put the final points on the board when Romeo Dorsey returned a Crooksville punt 76 yards to paydirt. Morrison’s sixth PAT had the Colts on top, 42-0.

The second half was played under the OHSAA “running clock” rule and Crooksville managed to avoid a shutout by scoring late on a three-yard run by Noah Dickerson.

Meadowbrook finished with 298 yards of offense, including 196 passing and 102 rushing.

Hupp completed 13-of-16 aerials for 178 yards and three TDs while back-up QB Justice Huey was 3-of-4 for 17 yards. Four players – Hupp, Daylen Rivera, Bopp and Huey – all had between 22 and 26 yards rushing while McManaway and Trevon Mayle both caught three passes.

The Colts moved the sticks 17 times; did not fumble and had 11 penalties for 90 yards.

Crooksville managed just 124 total yards, with 136 on the ground and a net of minus-eight through the air on one completion in four attempts.

The Ceramics had 11 first downs; lost two-of-three fumbles and had six penalties for 34 yards.

The Colts play their third straight home game on Friday, with River View coming to Byesville.
