Jo Ann Mitchell

Jo Ann Mitchell, age 79, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Sunday morning, March 10, 2024, at the home of her daughter, Traci. She was surrounded by love and went peacefully after a busy day visiting and singing with her daughter and son, Tony. Mrs. Mitchell was born Jo Ann Beer on October 16, 1944, to parents Glenn and Thelma Greathouse Beer in Buckhannon, West Virginia, where she met her first love, Jesse Barnett. They had three children together.

Jo Ann enjoyed gardening. She tended any seed she put into the earth, growing it into the most beautiful plant. She was an avid reader and was always waiting in anticipation for the newest novels. She loved music. She listened to everything from rock & roll to bluegrass. As a young woman, Jo Ann swooned over Elvis Presley and took pleasure in dancing, well known among family and friends for her rendering of “The Twist” made popular by Chubby Checker. Later in life, some of her happiest moments were singing along with her husband, Ivan Mitchell, and family members as Ivan strummed away on his guitar.  She and Ivan were classic car enthusiasts who attended shows throughout the Midwest. They usually drove away with trophies for Ivan’s modified Chevy S10. Jo Ann also possessed a passion for traveling, taking in the sights and cultures of New York City, Chicago, Texas, the deep south, and various locations throughout Appalachia. Her dream was to see the giant sequoia trees in northern California, and this dream came true in 2021. “I just can’t believe it. Me, little Jo Ann Beer, standing here among the redwoods.” Jo Ann was a long- standing member of Saint Stephen Catholic Church in Caldwell.

Jo Ann is survived by her two children, Tony Barnett and Traci Barnett (Donald Denning); her first husband, Jesse Barnett; three children of her second husband, Ivan Mitchell, John Lynn (Annette), Rodney Lynn, and Cindy Wehr (Tim); seven granddaughters, Tiffany Bell (David), Brittany Eckert (Jordan), Melinda White Abts (Ron), Kym White Smith, Tera Lynn, Jessica Carpenter (Devon), and Megan Shaw; grandson, TJ Wehr; several great-grandchildren, Hannah and Kacie Bell, Hadley, Avery, Mason and Ethan Eckert, Andrea White, and Jenna Triplett; sisters, Linda Ball, Nancy Higgins (Rick), and Millie Beer; nieces, Lisa Conway Wilson, Amanda Beer Woody, Dana Barbee Siegfried, and Stephanie Barbee; nephew, Patrick Conway; and beloved close friend, Annette Thomas.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Tina Barnett Griffon; her husband, Ivan Mitchell; her father, Glenn Beer; mother, Thelma Reeder (Mark); brother, Allen Beer; son-in-law, Joseph White; brother-in-law, Howard Mitchell; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Bob Barbee; sister-in-law, Barbara Barnett; and niece, Becky Conway Newsom.
