Lawrence A. “Larry” Walters

Lawrence A. “Larry” Walters, age 78, of Thornville, died Friday, September 19, 2025, at his home.  He was born January 26, 1947, in Steubenville, son of the late Lawrence and Lila Allen Walters.  He was a 1965 graduate of Meadowbrook High School and a 1994 graduate of The Ohio State University with a BA in Education.  He was a lifelong learner, completing several courses through
Hillsdale College.  Larry was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, serving aboard the USS Henley, and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the line of duty.  He retired as a teacher with the Ohio Department of Corrections, working from the Noble Correctional Institution in Caldwell and the Southeastern Correctional Institution in Lancaster.  Larry was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Vietnam Veterans Association.  He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle and reading.  Larry was devoted to his family.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Paulette Jones Walters, whom he married May 27, 1971, and who died February 13, 2024; and his sister, Lucinda Walters.

Surviving are two daughters, Leigh Ann Walters of Austin, Texas and Shannon Marie Walters (Ron Mitchell) of Bloomington, Illinois; six grandchildren; 2 great-grandsons; two brothers Les A. (Shirley) Walters of Salisbury, North Carolina and Lee A. (Edie) Walters of Adairsville, Georgia; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, Ohio, where the funeral will be observed on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Stephen Hannum officiating.  Noble County Veteran Service Organizations will present graveside military honors at Hiramsburg Cemetery.The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org; the ASPCA at www.secure.aspca.org; or to Central Ohio Hospice at www.ohiohospice.org.  An online guestbook may be signed at www.mcvay-perkins.com.
